About the class

From basic principles of GUI design to practical know-how
Take the first step in GUI design by learning the essential basic GUI skills.

GUI design acts like a guide for delivering service content and communicating with users through graphic elements on digital device screensI will do it. Even if you see the same painting at an art museum, your experience at the museum may vary depending on what kind of docent you meet. The same goes for app design.

Even if we have the same content, the feeling that comes to us is different from person to person even if we talk about the same thing, such as an app that is friendly, an app that makes us feel fun, or an app that is rational and objective. It is the role of a GUI designer to create this kind of feeling. The most basic one is usability, but it provides a positive sensibility and leaves a good image in the user's memory. I think this is something only GUI designers can do.

While logical design that understands the cognitive characteristics of users is important, it also plays a role in clarifying brand identity and conveying emotional experiences. Therefore, GUI designers must have both rational and emotional visual expression skills.

This class is aimed at beginners, so we'll take a step-by-step look at the basic principles and processes required for GUI design. You can develop the ability to create your own representative screen of app design through the practice of creating a concept and implementing it visually.

Eligible participants

  • Job-seekers who want to do GUI design after graduation
  • Current designers who want to advance their careers as GUI designers
  • A design beginner who wants to try GUI design but is wondering where to start

Pre-course notes

  • This class includes hands-on exercises using Figma.
  • It doesn't cover how to use the Pygma tool, so please learn the basic usage.

What makes this class special

Learn all about GUI design with a four-step core process

❶ GUI concept and workflow

First, let's look at GUI concepts and processes. I'm going to look at what GUI is, how it differs from UX and UI, and find out about the order and duties of GUI work.

❷ GUI design project planning

Second, we'll look at GUI design planning. When it comes to planning, you can think of it as the role of UX. However, when it comes to the visual domain, the GUI designer must lead both planning and implementation. Learn how to plan and conceptualize visual elements and start your own projects.

❸ Implementation steps using prototyping tools

I'm going to try to implement an actual GUI screen. However, this is not a class dealing with prototyping tools, so it's a good idea to learn how to use basic prototyping tools. Rather than technical aspects, I'm going to deal with how to visually implement concepts and create the basis and logic for GUI design.

❹ Complete a career path as a design

Finally, we will finish the class by talking about preparing for a career in design.

All of you through class

You can create the example below.

  • Expressing design direction through position maps
  • Moodboard and GUI concept planning
  • Representative screen design
  • Create design style guidelines

Towards the two goals of aesthetics and usability,
To be able to design a GUI that suits the service and is perfect for the user
We'll help you in class.

We created a class so that you can enjoy the entire design process in a short time, from market research for GUI design, concept drawing, design planning, and actual implementation. I think it will be a useful time for job-seekers who are preparing to become GUI designers, non-majors who want to try GUI design, and designers who want to expand their field of work into new fields.

Yull

Hello,

I'm Yull, a designer.

I'm a freelance designer who starts with GUI design and does design work related to UX in general, and a design researcher who studies UX design methodologies. Currently, I'm also teaching UX/UI design at university.

When I started my social life as a GUI designer, my job role wasn't clear because the concept of UI was just beginning to be understood. Therefore, I had to take on graphics-related work at the same time as GUI design work, and there were many complaints at the time, but looking back, I feel that these experiences were the foundation that enabled me to expand my field of work and continue designing until now.

While going through electronics companies, credit card companies, and startups, I have come across various platforms such as smartphones, consumer electronics, kiosks, and financial service apps. While experiencing large and small organizations, from large companies to startups, I was able to develop competencies other than design required for work, such as organizational life, communication skills, and career management. Also, during the design lecture, I was able to identify the grievances and needs of prospective designers, such as what difficulties students face and what additional areas should be made up for.

In this class, I put together the practical experience I have gained in the business up until now, what I learned through design theory research, and what I felt during classes with students. I hope this class can help you take a step further in your growth as a GUI designer.
