Skills You’ll Learn

You will acquire the ability to appreciate art

“Yomitoku Chikara” will acquire the intentions hidden in the work.

Art becomes more familiar

“I want to be an artist on the side that draws!” And so on, new desires may be born.

I want to talk to people unintentionally

I unintentionally want to tell people about it, and I want to go to museums and galleries.

“You can freely appreciate pictures with your own sensibilities!”

Have you ever been in trouble when you hear that?

“Even if I'm told to be free... it's kind of vague, and I'm not sure...”

“In the first place, I don't have much confidence in my sensibility to look at my paintings, but when people say that, on the contrary, I'm confused...”

I think there have been experiences where you felt this way inwardly?

In the history of painting that has existed for hundreds of years, there are thoughts that painters from time to time have put into their paintings and various techniques that they have devised. If we decipher that trajectory, we will try to overcome the achievements left by previous generations anew, and it will not only highlight the special existence of a painter, but also the intellectually curious nature (saga) possessed by “humans” themselves.

By knowing the “rationale”, you will notice that there is a backbone that flows continuously at the root even in a wide variety of expressions that seem divided at first glance, from classical paintings to contemporary contemporary art.

In this class, we will use paintings left by painters who have inscribed their names in history as motifs, add considerations while imagining them, and give you hints for enjoying the work itself head-on.

The words used are not difficult to understand, and I tried to make the content fun to learn even if you don't have much knowledge of pictures.

Enjoy a “live performance” called art

Art works are a kind of “live”.

Van Gogh's sunflowers were painted 130 years ago, and they look the same as they were back then, and you can still appreciate them today.

You might take it for granted, but for example, you can't go listen to John Lennon's concert right now.

But painting is different.

The realism is present right in front of you, and the painter's breathing is transmitted even from the texture of the paint, the way the brush is moved, and the lines of what was drawn.

Van Gogh, Da Vinci, and Vermeer

I will send you plenty of hints for yomitoku about the painter's intentions, which cannot be conveyed in media that focus only on the painter's humanity.

Listening to this class will definitely make you want to go to an art museum and tell your friends about art. (Don't talk too much.)

Well then, welcome to the concert of legendary painters!

Say a word to your classmates!

In conventional painting appreciation methods, I feel that there are many opportunities to talk about the life of the painter who drew it anyway, or to group art fields such as “talent, genius, sensibility” with words that are easy to express.

There are as many paintings as there are stars in the world, and it can be understood that the excellent works among them are actually connected in a linear pattern. Speaking based on this way of thinking, for example, when it comes to why Pablo Picasso, who is called a genius painter of the 20th century, was able to become “Picasso,” it is none other than because he succeeded in a strategy to renew it while riding on linear values.

In this class, we aim to make everyone's ability to appreciate paintings a bit different while deciphering the appearance of those “lines” in plain language as possible.

This class was a project that began with my concerns.

That is, as one of those who supply important materials used by painters, shouldn't we acquire the ability to appreciate works more? And I want to get even a little closer to the world the painter sees.

Even if you're a material professional, you're not an appreciator. I hope you enjoy learning from the same perspective as all of you.

Kazunori Tsushima (HOLBEIN)

Joined Holbein Art Supplies Co., Ltd. in 1997. From developing highly specialized products such as electric easels, watercolor paper Avalon, RSG canvases, NW brushes, etc., to product development and dissemination activities for a wide range of arts, such as clinical art, chalk art, etc. Courses on painting materials are given at universities starting with Tama Art University, art preparatory schools, culture centers, etc. Production processes and examples are provided for books such as “Watercolor/Landscape Sketch Beginner's Notebook” (Graphic Company) and “Tips for Watercolor Pencils” (Yuyu Publishing). As a painter, he is also involved in popularizing painting techniques and materials.

Professor Tomonori Sato's commentary will delve deeper into paintings that have somehow been seen in art textbooks with interesting explanations not mentioned in textbooks. This content is perfect for adults to relearn. Let's have fun learning together.
