2 Inflation Is Falling. So Why Are Things Still Expensive?

Inflation is falling.

If inflation is falling, why aren't prices falling too?

THINK → ADD → SPEAK

A lower inflation rate does not necessarily mean lower prices.

STEP 1. THINK

A decline in the inflation rate

does not necessarily mean

that the overall price level is falling.

a decline in the inflation rate

does not necessarily mean

the overall price level

is falling

inflation rate

와

price level

Prices may still be rising,

just at a slower pace than before.

STEP 2. ADD

Inflation measures the rate

at which the general price level increases,

rather than the price level itself.

Inflation measures the rate

at which the general price level increases

rather than

the price level itself

A rather than B

B가 아니라 A

Inflation describes the rate of change rather than the absolute level of prices.

STEP 3. ADD — EXAMPLE

$110 → approximately $113

즉,

The rate of price increases has fallen,

but the price level itself remains elevated.

remain elevated

Housing costs remain elevated.

Food prices remain elevated.

STEP 4. ADD — A MORE ADVANCED CONCEPT

disinflation

Disinflation occurs when inflation slows

but remains positive.

disinflation

deflation

Disinflation means slower price increases,

whereas deflation refers to an actual decline in the general price level.

whereas ~

STEP 5. ADD — WHY DO PEOPLE STILL FEEL POORER?

Households do not experience inflation

as an abstract annual percentage.

What matters to households

is not only how quickly prices are rising now,

but how much prices have already risen over time.

What matters to households

is not only how quickly prices are rising now

but how much prices have already risen over time

accumulated price increases

STEP 6. ADD — CUMULATIVE EFFECT

Even if inflation returns to a relatively low level,

the cumulative increase in prices

may continue to weigh on household budgets.

Even if inflation returns to a relatively low level

the cumulative increase in prices

may continue to weigh on

household budgets

weigh on ~

Higher interest rates are weighing on borrowers.

Rising housing costs are weighing on household finances.

STEP 7. ADD — PURCHASING POWER

purchasing power

If wages fail to keep pace with the cumulative increase in prices,

households may experience a lasting decline

in their real purchasing power.

wages fail to keep pace with ~

the cumulative increase in prices

a lasting decline

real purchasing power

특히

keep pace with ~

Wage growth needs to keep pace with inflation.

If wage growth consistently lags behind price growth,

workers can become worse off in real terms.

lag behind ~

in real terms

STEP 8. ADD — THE PSYCHOLOGICAL EFFECT

Consumers tend to remember

the price increases they have experienced

rather than focusing solely on the latest inflation figure.

Improvements in inflation data

do not immediately translate into

improvements in consumer sentiment.

translate into ~

STEP 9. ADD — STRUCTURAL VIEW

This helps explain why

official economic indicators

and people's lived economic experience

can move in different directions.

This helps explain why ~

official economic indicators

people's lived economic experience

move in different directions

Both can be true at the same time.

STEP 10. YOUR PERSPECTIVE

In my view,

focusing exclusively on the current inflation rate

can obscure the financial pressure

created by years of accumulated price increases.

focusing exclusively on ~

can obscure ~

the financial pressure

created by years of accumulated price increases

the overall price level

cumulative inflation

real wage growth

purchasing power

STEP 11. SPEAK

A decline in the inflation rate does not necessarily mean that the overall price level is falling.

Inflation measures the rate at which prices are increasing rather than the price level itself.

Therefore, prices can continue to rise even when inflation is falling, just at a slower pace than before.

Economists often refer to this phenomenon as disinflation.

The problem for households is that lower inflation does not reverse the price increases that have already occurred.

Even if inflation returns to a relatively low level, the cumulative increase in prices may continue to weigh on household budgets.

If wages fail to keep pace with those increases, households can experience a lasting decline in their real purchasing power.

This also helps explain why improvements in official inflation data do not immediately translate into stronger consumer sentiment.

In my view, focusing exclusively on the current inflation rate gives us an incomplete picture of the financial pressure households are experiencing.

To understand the real impact of inflation, we need to consider not only how quickly prices are rising today, but also how much they have risen over time and whether wages have kept pace.
