porcelain painting class

Hello! I'm Eugene, a workshop owner who runs Atelier Porterian in Dangsan-dong, Seoul. I'm doing a job called porcelain painting, which is unfamiliar to me.

Commonly found in European pottery,

What is porcelain painting?

It refers to the work of drawing a picture on a finished white porcelain pottery called porcelain. I make paint using special pigments for pottery and oil for pottery, and paint on pottery using a pen and brush.

It can be said that it is the last step in the pottery making process. Paintings commonly found in European pottery were completed through porcelain painting.

Give something special to your calm everyday life.

Many people who come to our workshop tell us. If you only come here, the time is fast!

It's best to get rid of distractions, because only the moment you do this work is a time when you can forget all your worries and hard work and focus. (They also say that it's possible to get a picture bruise just like a bruise..!)

What kind of food would you like to put in the bowl I drew?

Porcelain art is not just about completing and displaying paintings, but also has the advantage of being able to create and use them yourself. You can draw and create your own artwork, put food on top of it, or enjoy your work together while drinking a drink! The sense of accomplishment you feel while using your own unique bowl, which is the only one in the world, is a great joy that cannot be replaced by anything.

I can make my own one-of-a-kind gift for a loved one, and some people draw a picture of a special moment on a bowl and present it. Even if you just engrave your initials, it's really cool.

Not good at drawing?

I wonder if I can paint like that just by looking at the finished works, but once I get to know the work process, I can see that it's really easy!

Students come fearfully to say they haven't drawn since elementary school, but please always finish a nice work. This is possible because the work process isn't really difficult.

This is how porcelain painting works.

I'll start by learning the basics of porcelain art.

From porcelain painting From how to make paints with important pigments and oils, to how to use various toolsI'm going to learn. The pigments and brushes used in porcelain painting are different from regular watercolors. It doesn't feel like the pigment is seeping in, it feels like it's being applied.

This unusual pigment until it is baked in a kiln on pottery Since it is placed without penetrating, it can be modified infinitelyDo it! This is the greatest advantage of porcelain painting. That you can delete it even if you make a mistake!

From simple line drawings to colorful bouquet paintings

I'm going to draw everything from line drawing, which is the basis of porcelain painting completed with lines, to bouquet paintings using multi-colored pigments mixed with various flowers.

I use paper and food paper to sketch on pottery, so I don't feel burdened with sketching. Even those who really don't think they can draw can get the job done easily!

Learn how to use a variety of tools, from pens to brushes.

I'm going to use the most basic pen, a tool called a fountain pen. I'll teach you step by step so that you can draw these wonderful buildings even if you learn how to use a simple pen. Once you learn, you'll be able to do more diverse tasks after taking the class.

Porcelain painting brushes are much smaller than I thought. With this small brush and a brush called Detail Liner, which is smaller than that brush, I'll learn how to paint large areas, how to paint narrow parts, and how to use details one by one. You'll find yourself developing as you complete each picture you draw on the bowl.

Everyone's beautifully worked bowl

Please send it to me

Last of the work! The bowl must be baked in a kiln to complete. Only then can it be used as a tableware. If you send me the bowl you've worked on, I'll bake it hot (kiln firing) and send it to you. I'll send you a kiln firing ticket and a round-trip delivery coupon in the material kit.

In class, I'll show you what a kiln is and how the bowl I sent is fired in a kiln. If you understand this process, you'll have a deeper understanding of porcelain painting.

Porcelain art is a wonderful hobby.

I'll release all the information you need so you can continue after the class, such as how to buy materials, what kind of pottery to buy, how and where to get a kiln, and how to find a good picture to draw on a plate!

Yes, I've prepared a present. As a bonus, I'm not going to make it together in the actual class, but I'll also show you how to work on a curved cup so that you can continue your porcelain art after the plate!

Ready to make your own one and only bowl in the world?

As I work on this work, I'm happy every day. I have a desire to enjoy this happiness with many people. I hope many people will enjoy the work of porcelain painting.

If you want to give yourself a special day away from complicated worries and everyday life, please join me!

Atelier Potterian

Hello, I'm Eugene, a workshop owner who runs Atelier Porterian in Dangsan-dong, Seoul. I work by drawing pictures on bowls with special pigments for pottery. It's so wonderful to create a beautiful work using a bowl as drawing paper, and I'm immersed in it.

It may seem too difficult just to look at the works, but the advantage of porcelain art is that if you know the details of the work, even those who are really, really new to painting can produce high-quality works! Please trust me and follow me:) Everyone is also fondant for the endless charm of porcelain art! I hope it's missing!
