Would you like to make a cute Japanese paper brooch?

In this class, we will use Japanese paper to make Japanese paper brooches. The content of the curriculum is basic and introductory, but I think the way we look at Japanese paper will change from before.

Speaking of washi, shoji paper or hanshi?

Speaking of Japanese paper accessories, are they Japanese style ones?

I think that kind of image is strong. Change that image and create cute motifs of your choice.

If you change your perspective, your range of expression will expand. The reason for planning this class is that I want everyone to know more about the fun of crafting using Japanese paper. The ultimate goal is for students to learn the basics in this course and to have them express themselves in their own way.

Once you learn everything, you'll be able to create original motifs too!

As you progress through the curriculum, you will learn how to make the most of the bleeding and texture of Japanese paper. I'll teach you the basics of how to make brooches, so you'll be able to develop from there and create your own favorite motifs.

Once you have a cute brooch, enjoy it in a variety of ways, such as attaching it to your clothes and going out or as a gift for that special someone.

Each handmade Japanese paper brooch makes life enjoyable

When torn, the fibers of Japanese paper are soft and have a gentle texture. I also like the nostalgic and gentle atmosphere, so I think it matched my style.

What is the concept of Tonsha

Communication starts with a brooch.

When I put on a brooch, I was asked, “What is it made of?” “Cream soda is good.” I would be happy if I could create my favorite motifs, wear them, etc., and use them as an opportunity for communication.

Born in Toyama. I got married and came to Ehime, where my husband is from. After that, I moved to Uchiko-cho, which has a handmade washi culture, and came across Tenjin Paper Factory's “Hagire Set”.

A small tear that comes out during production. I want to make something very attractive because it contains strips of various colors and types of Japanese paper! The kids were still small, so I was able to create something that I thought was cute while tearing it off, sticking it on a mount, and playing with them. I want to carry this “cute” with me. I thought that led me to the birth of this brooch made of Japanese paper.

After that, when the work was presented on SNS, we received an unexpected response, and we received voices from general stores and cafes inside and outside the prefecture, and began consignment sales. We also participate in events and special exhibitions inside and outside the prefecture.

Also, recently, we have held brooch workshops to make Japanese paper in order to spread the appeal of Japanese paper, taking advantage of our 8-year production history.

When I wear a brooch made of Japanese paper, I'm often talked to. You can also casually show off your “likes” and hobbies through brooches. I'm happy when a brooch made of Japanese paper triggers a variety of conversations.

Creator Interviews

Q. What kind of activities does the teacher do? Please tell me about your teacher!

A. I originally liked handmade things, and I did a lot of handmade things. Currently, I focus on making brooches and accessories made of Japanese paper, and I also make original wrapping paper and handmade wild flower books. We also sell works at webshops, outsourced stores, and events. Recently, they have also been putting effort into teaching activities, and they also hold small-group workshops at home and workshops requested by the community.

Q. How did your teacher start making Japanese paper brooches?

A. When my child was little, I bought a washi stripe set at a nearby washi shop. I started making washi brooches because I was playing with my kids and making things I liked using various types of washi strips.

Q. Why did you offer online classes with CLASS101?

A. It's been over 8 years since I made Japanese paper brooches. I want more people to know the fun of crafting with Japanese paper. I decided to start this class because I thought that washi would become more familiar and enjoyable by spreading the ideas of various people rather than making it on my own.

Q. Who would you recommend this class to?

A. I want you to know new ways to enjoy washi. Those who want to incorporate Japanese paper close to their lives while preserving old-fashioned traditional culture.

Q. What kind of experience do you want the students to have through this class?

A. An experience that changes the way you look at Japanese paper. Normally, I often touch washi with shoji or calligraphy hanshi, etc., but I think that by taking this class, the way you look at washi will change, and it will look delicious, look like a coat, or look different.

Q. Please give a message to the students!

A. Nice to meet you. My name is Wakemiho from Tonsha. I also love traditional culture unique to Japan, such as kimonos and tea, but I also like to incorporate a new style tailored to the times while preserving traditions. Washi is also a traditional Japanese culture, but I tried to think of a new method in my own way. And I would like to work with you to create new ways to enjoy washi.
