Q & A
Q. What do you think is more important in comics, pictures or stories?
When I was a student, I thought painting was the most important thing. I thought the story was secondary. But things have changed a lot now. So much so that the story comes first and the pictures come together. If the goal of walking on both feet is a story, writing and drawing will be on both sides. I think they're walking one step at a time, keeping pace together.
Q. The artist has an unusual career, starting with published comics and then moving on to webtoons. “I was good at starting a webtoon.” Do you have a moment you want to do?
In the past, in published manga, getting older was a huge handicap for artists. However, the readers of <microbe> ranged from their 30s to 50s, and there were also many readers of my age. I have come to believe that I can grow old with my readers even if I don't want the attention of teenage readers anymore. I think it's thanks to this webtoon environment that an artist with adult-type works like me has settled in and been able to work until now.
Q. <microbe> is a work that comforted and resonated with so many readers who are office workers. What kind of work is it for the artist?
<microbe> is actually a work I was forced to do because of a contract. However, while serializing <microorganisms>, I had a small chemical effect. I was comforted and helped by the writings of readers who empathize with the characters in the manga and reveal themselves. A reflection on living selfishly in my youth. So I wanted to get better through <microbiots>. <microbe> The inside is full of words addressed to myself.
Q. I'm worried because I always seem to come up with similar stories. How can I publish works on various topics?
No artist lives by looking at dozens or hundreds of topics or themes. In the past, cartoonists created hundreds of titles throughout their lives. It's about receiving articles from professional story writers and producing manuscripts. At that time, a wide variety of topics and themes may unfold, but I don't think it's possible for an artist to unfold countless topics and themes without a work produced by such a professional production studio.
