Re: English Studio

Time to reorganize with plain grammar and English thinking

We've been studying English for quite some time. I started English in elementary school and learned a lot of grammar through middle and high school. Present completion, relative pronouns, 5 forms, modal verbs... these are familiar grammars even if you just hear the name.

However, when I try to speak in English, strangely, sentences don't come out very well.

“Is this done now...?”

“Should I use in or at here?”

“Why do native speakers say this?”

Maybe it's not because I don't know grammar, but because I haven't been able to connect grammar to the sense of English. When I think about Korean first and move to English one by one, I feel like I've transferred Korean to English as it is, even though the sentences are grammatically correct.

So in this course, rather than memorizing grammar from the beginning, the grammar we already know is “Why do we say this in English?” I'm going to look at it again from that point of view.

Knowing grammar is a bit different from understanding English. For example, when learning to complete the present, you may remember the formula have + p.p. However, in actual English, they don't end by saying “something that happened in the past,” and they also choose to finish now based on how that thing is connected to the present and how they feel at this moment.

The same goes for to and for. Both can be translated in Korean as “to,” “for...,” and “to,” but in English, their movement, purpose, direction, and focus are slightly different.

Would is also much easier to understand if you look at English words a little more carefully and in a way that takes a step back, rather than simply memorizing them as “the past tense of will.”

In this way, even when learning a grammar in this course

“Why are you saying this?”

“What scenes do native speakers think of?”

“What's the difference between this expression and that expression?”

Let's take a look at it together.

What will I learn in this course?

Start with the basic framework of an English sentence. First sort out how an English sentence is formed through the word order, spelling, and sentence format of the sentence, give it an inanimate object, complete it now, do you? Wow Are You? Let's take a look at the expressions we know but are confusing when using them, one by one.

Expressions such as for·during·while, to·for, in·on·at that are similarly translated into Korean but are used differently in English are simply “in this case, this is it!” Rather than memorizing it, I'll try to grasp each standard and sense.

Quan, additive, and inexplicable nouns, modal verbs, would, used to, will and be going to, perceptual verbs, and relationships. These are grammars I learned at school at least once, but this time I'm going to look at them again from a slightly different perspective.

Grammar that is easier to apply than grammar that is difficult to memorize

The grammar covered in this course is not just a collection of new and difficult grammars. rather

“Why are you saying this?”

“They're both similar, what's the difference?”

“What exactly does this expression feel like?”

I take out the things I've always been curious about while studying English and take a look at them one by one.

It will be especially helpful for those who have studied grammar but still find English difficult, those who read grammar books but are confused by putting it into sentences, and those who want to know the subtle differences and natural nuances of English expressions.

RE: Take a look at grammar again at ENGLISH STUDIO.

The goal of this course is not to memorize more grammar. Reconnecting the grammar you already know in the English vocabulary, way of thinking, situation, and nuance.

So after listening to all the lectures, I thought, “This grammar is this formula.” It doesn't stop at, “Ah, that's why they say this in English.” I hope I can understand that.

A time to reorganize grammars that seemed obvious, take a step away from English that was only thought of in Korean, and think a little more like English.
