Skills You’ll Learn
Hallo This is Hong Smith (Kim Hong-cheol).
Recently, we've been spending a lot of time at home. I think travel has already become an old tale. Aren't you soothing your frustration by just looking at a bunch of photos you took at a travel destination a few years ago? Memories that remain only in photographs become increasingly blurry in the head as time passes.
(This is a picture I drew when I went to Japan 5 years ago, (I can't remember when I went there)
If you look into travel photos,
How about taking out good memories before they are even more forgotten, the people you met there, the beautiful garden that you almost accidentally passed by, and the thrill of stopping by the church for a while with a dippen and leaving a story in pictures and writing on paper? Of course, while learning to draw.
In this class
While talking about travel, I'll teach you the theory of perspective, drawing lines, and drawing architecture and people one by one. Originally, the teacher's small talk during class was the most interesting. I'm not going to learn picture theory step by step from the beginning. It's like studying English with a lot of grammar.
Draw with the sensibility of a deep pen.
This class has the fun of “deep pen,” where you draw with ink. When I watch a foreign historical drama movie, I'm going to draw with the dippen that used to write a letter with a feathered pen, and the dippen where cartoonists drew comics on paper before the webtoons came out. I feel like an expert already.
Learn pencil drawing and watercolor painting expressions.
Pencils have inexhaustible expressive power. In this class, we'll teach you everything about pencils. You'll know how scary a tree with a dark heart can be. My memories would be even more beautiful if I added colorful colors to them, right?
We create stories with the expressions and poses of various people.
I create stories by drawing the various expressions and actions of people at travel destinations one by one. Also, when I observe people's facial expressions, I also feel a new feeling that I didn't feel at a travel destination.
I'm going to collect fragments of my memories and compose them into pictures.
I'll collect photos and show you how to compose a street with people and architecture in one picture. In this class, I don't draw a scene from a single photo. I need to gather my memories and create my own story. If you draw such small thoughts, the picture will be even more rich in stories.
It's easier than I thought.
Originally, I wasn't good at drawing either. So I can easily let you know. In this class, if you draw a building as if you were chatting with me about the feelings you felt at a travel destination, and draw people who have fun talking, your fear of lines will disappear and your painting skills will improve.
Don't expect it.
Don't expect your painting skills to improve as you listen to the course. It may lead to great disappointment later and move away from the picture again. Everyone's learning time is different. There are people who slowly lose their skills from the beginning, and there are also people whose drawing doesn't increase at all, and then suddenly increases later. Don't be frustrated that it's ruined. It's a process. So let's start by looking for fun.
We need to ease the burden.
The best way to draw is to take the burden off. People who are involved in painting also often say this. “Blank paper is the scariest thing.” Go. I know better than anyone else that the fear of ruining a picture can cause it to deviate from the first line drawn. There are many times when a picture I draw comfortably is even better. You must clear your mind and learn how to draw. So I'm just going to start with excitement at a fun travel destination.
Drawing a picture is...
It means I can learn one more language to express myself. When words don't have enough communication skills, they are often filled with pictures. You don't have to draw well. It doesn't matter. It's more important how you portray me in pictures.
Also, it stores my memories. You may think that photography is not enough, but the memory you feel in the process of painting has a very different depth than the memory you feel in a photo that has been stopped by capturing a moment.
One more thing, painting heals me. When I draw a picture, my thought hand leaves a mark on a blank sheet of paper, so the painting completely resembles me. I'm drawing a different version of myself.
I hope you will find the excitement you had forgotten while painting with me again.

Hallo This is Hong Smith. I was a kid who wasn't good at drawing when I was a kid. However, I loved painting so much that I continued to paint, so now I live as a painter and writer.
I love architecture, so I've published a book called “The Birth of Architecture,” and I write for daily newspapers and journals. In this way, I started the class with the desire not only to continue to have what I learned while painting, but to share it with people who are now beginning to draw. I also wanted to try another chance.
I think being able to draw a picture means being able to use a different language other than speaking or writing a message to people. I hope you learn another language too.
