A journey from paper to the theater

Hello, I'm active mainly in Asia Film director Kim Hui-geun It's. I'm working on a lot of videos and movies. Among them The film <The Boy with the Horns won the grand prize at the Busan Independent Film Festival, and has been released for more than 2 weeks at 12 venues nationwide.

Currently, only directors who have registered in Korea through a theatrical release can sign up Korea Film Directors Guild (D.G.K)I am the youngest member of.

Kim Hui-geun FilmHe is working as, and is leading a team of actors who have been with him for 8 years and is working on interesting tasks.

But I never learned about movies.

I had never received any film education until I produced <The Boy with the Horn>.

I didn't even enter a university, and as soon as I graduated from high school 'Military-Workplace'I lived a life leading to The reason I was able to get a job while continuing to work from when I was 12 years old until now is my own without following a formal education An efficient wayThis is because I have been creating works with.

Now, based on the experience and know-how we have built up to now 'Producer/ Distributor'We are also receiving commercial film proposals, participating in various interesting projects, preparing for the next film, and planning to shoot this year.

Unlike others, away from formal education.

In this class Formal “planning, shooting, editing” Not actually Help with the journey from 'paper' to 'theater'I would like to give you. I'll record, process, and deliver the experiences I've learned by bumping into them.

What I felt while making a “movie” for a long time was that “planning, shooting, and editing” was not absolutely important paperStarting from personsTowards, and together situAfter going through, screensIt was said that the journey to was important.

Paper, people, field, screen. Through these four topics, I would like to give you a fun solution based on practical experiences.

The beginning of the movie: create a character, start a story.

Many people are afraid of “scenarios” and feel overwhelmed. I spend all night looking for inspiration, “I'm only directing, I'm looking for an artist.”I also decide to say that. What I can clearly say is that a 'scenario' is a kind of 'technology' like programming.

If you learn this' technique 'properly, actors will come to your work, and you will be the biggest unshakable center in the field.

There are many books on various techniques, such as how to get a good investment, how to write a Korean scenario, etc. I can only say for sure about one scenario. “I think the actors are crazy because they want to act” You must write down the scenario.

How to create an 'attractive character' that captivates actors. I'll tell you about the storyline where the characters run towards one goal, and the “screenwriting method” that will lead your imagination to the screen in a very easy and efficient manner.

Preparing for the film: location, another character

Great scenes in movies occur when “places” and “characters” face each other in harmony. “Place” is actually another character in the movieThat's it. When it comes to location hunting, the most important thing I think about is to “listen” to what the location says.

Listening to what a place says is a judgment about whether the characters who should go to that place have something in common with each other.

I need to think about what my 'character' is moving for and where to go, and find a location. The location should not only be a place where Mise-en-scène excels, but also think about situations related to production, such as whether production is smooth and whether permission can be obtained.

One of the things I'm good at is this It's a process of meeting a 'location' and getting permission by persuading them. I'll share my know-how on various locations I've experienced while shooting not only in Korea, but also in Japan and Singapore.

  1. How to find the right place (meet, not find)
  2. Make 100% use of the location (find what you need in the location)
  3. How to get 'permission' to make everyone laugh (persuasion and negotiation)
  4. Location utilization methods and precautions for fast, reliable, and fast sites

Once you know these secrets, you'll even be able to figure out the scenario for my film and the perfect location for it.

Film Production: For the 'Source of Power' Image

<The Boy with the Horns> Trailer Video

It's <a boy with horns who was filmed and edited by director Kim Hui-geun himself >.

I would like to teach you how to use “images and scenes” rather than just a theory or method of “shooting.”

I stick to my own shooting and editing method, and thankfully, I get love calls as a cinematographer and shoot other directors' works.

I don't have good equipment, and I don't have a deep theory about shooting.

However, I have a clear standard for the image that a 'camera' should capture when entering a work, and I have a clear idea of what to show as a pillar of my work.

Of my movie I'll tell you how and why “scene” becomes powerful.

Film's hidden core: behind the camera, how to communicate with actors

The movie The person behind the cameraet Person standing in frontIt is made because of fields. I lead a team of actors I've been with for 8 years, and I'm still creating works together. I study acting every week, and I'm constantly training, honing my skills, and trying to improve.

If you're a director, you need to know how to make an 'actor' your own person more than anyone else, and you need to know how to handle them effectively. To all the students through hands-on experience how to direct the actors and what the actors want From casting to shooting As a director, how to gain the trust of actors and get the characters they want, 'Acting directionI'll let you know about”.

Responding to unexpected situations: How to develop directing quickness without losing sight of the situation.

When I was shooting, I didn't plan Sudden situationsThey will occur. There are many difficult situations, but in order to adapt to the situation and not lose sight of the advantages, the director himself must have “directing quickness.” When that quickness meets an appropriate situation, unexpected scenes occur, and it can also be an opportunity to save the movie. In fact, many movies don't just shoot as they appear in the scenario, and a lot changes during the production stage.

At this time If you don't have “directing quickness,” you'll waste money and time stuck in planning and scenarios. This is where the director's ability actually comes into play. If the director doesn't shake, nothing shakes.

I'll show you how to develop “directing quickness” so that you can become an unwavering director in the field. Situations are not avoided, they are overcome.

Movies, Going Out into the World: Meeting with the 'Audience' and Preparing for Distribution

A “movie” belongs to the “audience” the moment it is made. Without an audience, the whole process of making a film might be unnecessary. I also always experienced a lot of despair in the “distribution” process, and I also felt that it was a “limitation.” “Distribution” does not end with simply signing a contract with a distributor or entering a film festival.

What is “distribution” strategyIt is Noonchi gameIt's also a great journey to reach out to the audience.

In order to distribute, it is necessary to be familiar with the overall process, and the director 'my'Who is it, 'My work“You need to know exactly what this is to be able to think about a strategy. I set up a distributor based on my experience so far and distribute my work myself.

  1. What kind of film festival and how to submit
  2. What to look out for when signing a contract with a distributor
  3. What preparations should I make to go to the theater, OTT, or IPTV
  4. What to do after “distribution”
  5. What are the characteristics of works that are well “distributed”

I'll show you the most practical things based on my experience. If I want to make my own movie, I have to get caught on the screen and meet the audience!

Continuous Film: How to convince people in the industry with your project

I try to be able to pitch my next film anytime, anywhere within 1 minute. I have a record of having the most business meetings with investors at the Busan International Film Festival Link of Cine Asia in '18.

More than just making movies How to connect with the business and how to process and invest in and distribute my work. Above all, I'll tell you all about how to develop a film at the planning stage, how to pitch to investors, how to communicate with people involved in the film industry, and meet people with a piece of paper about the position of my work in the industry, and how to create a scene.

I would like to tell you stories about business that you may not need right away, but that you must know one day at a reasonable price, without being heavy.

Movies, let's have fun: Promote your film and pay for production, the secret to successful crowdfunding

Recently, we have been crowdfunding not only independent films but also commercial films, but the biggest advantage of crowdfunding is'PR and funding“It's a part where you can proceed simultaneously.

<The boy with horns > started crowdfunding when I was a sergeant in my last years, Successful fundraising of 5 million won in production costs when working full time, and is effective in promotingThis is a great example of what I was able to do with.

When you want to create your first film, you have to spend too much time meeting investors right away or supporting various film festival funds or production support projects.

It's easy to think of “crowdfunding” as a way to reward your movie and sell tickets in advance. yet Tickets and merchandise for my movies that haven't been madeI'll tell you how to sell well, and how to successfully raise production costs and promote it nicely through how to keep 200% of the most important promise.

Hoping to be a spark in someone's heart.

<2014, 'White is Dirty' shooting site>

I had a lot of trouble after receiving the offer to open Class 101. There were works I was preparing, and there were many ongoing projects, so I had to make a quick selection. After a few weeks of thinking about it, it reminded me of the way I used to be wandering around wanting to make a “movie.” I'm really simply 'movie'I wanted to make, 'Film Director'I wanted to be this.

But even though there were so many schools, books, and lectures What you actually needI felt that there was no place to tell me about. What I needed at the time was not a formal lesson or theory, but something that could throw a spark into my heart.

Thinking about how I was 10 years ago when I was wandering around with nothing but a passion for directing, I decided to make this class better than anyone else. I'll tell you everything as I was 10 years ago.

It doesn't just end with a lecture. So that each student can become self-reliant and stand on their own through this course Colleagues walking togetherI want to be.

From when I was 12 when I made my first short film with a digital camera, to winning a grand prize at an independent film festival, opening a theater release, establishing a distributor, and receiving commercial film proposals What choices and concerns did they make What kind of mistake did you make.

Based on my works 'Choices, Methods, Mistakes, and Outcomes'I would like to actively talk about. The many trials and errors I have done and the wounds caused by falling will be a strong guide for all of the students.
