Q & A

Q. What would you say to those who are considering becoming a filmmaker?

Because I have no money, have no one to guide me, have no education, have no experience, have no talent... These are the so-called “I have no” excuses. Well, I'm not a “you can do it” type of person, but I'd recommend that you try it before you get scared and give up. Anyone can make at least a few short films or write a few screenplays. So make a short film. This is the time where we can make films with our smartphones.

Q. What should I focus on when making a film?

The most important thing is this. Set high standards. Notice the ugly side of the world. Dive deep into the darkness of human nature. Don't make rough compromises by saying, “This is enough.” I always work by comparing my work with only the best films in the world. Even with that, this is the best I can go. So imagine your standards being low. It will take you nowhere. Don't be easily satisfied with your work.

Q. What would you like to say to the students?

My story may not fit your individual and specific circumstances. Other directors may tell a different story, or maybe give advice that completely opposes mine. I've only mentioned the things I've learned through my limited experiences. Still, I believe you can get a handful of help if you don't just take my words literally and understand the intention behind them.
