McKinsey Way of Thinking and Technique - Required Introductory Course

Why has the mentality and work techniques of global consulting firm McKinsey been used by companies and office workers for a long time?

The strength of the McKinsey method is not simply knowing a lot of knowledge. It's a way of thinking about looking at complex problems structurally, finding the core, and organizing them logically to make actionable answers.

The author of this course was directly trained in this way of thinking and techniques by a McKinsey consultant while participating in a group project as a new employee. I focused on output, hypotheses, and facts, structured complex information using a framework, and trained MECE, logic trees, and pyramid structures over and over. Since then, these ways of thinking and techniques have been directly applied in the management planning office to establish strategies and solve problems in the company's major projects.

This is an essential introductory course that organizes what learners who are new to McKinsey's way of thinking and techniques must know based on this learning and practical experience.

First, we'll look at the overall structure of business skills required for office workers, and then understand the McKinsey Framework from the perspective of style, skill, and tool.

Next, you will learn the basic thinking of carrying out tasks leading to output orientation → hypothesis orientation → fact orientation. It also examines how systematization, repetition, familiarity, and imaging help thinking and information utilization from the perspective of cognitive psychology.

Afterwards, they learn strategies and strategic thinking, and analyze external environments and internal capabilities using various tools such as PEST, 3C, SWOT, 7S, 4M, and 4P. You'll also learn how to structure complex thoughts and tasks through matrices, logic trees, pyramid structures, and processes.

The core of the second half of the course is MECE thinking.

MECE doesn't end with simply understanding the concept of “no duplicates, no omissions.” 67 MECE thought structures, including opposing perspectives, management tools, components, and processes, are created and trained as 'thought rooms'.

The goal isn't to memorize many Framework names. It's about creating a McKinzie way of thinking that can think of an appropriate perspective, structure complex information, and make logical judgments when faced with a problem. This is a method that the author learned through direct training with a McKinsey consultant and has since used it in actual work.

Basics of Thinking → Strategic Thinking → Analysis Tool → Structured Frame → MECE Training → Understanding and Using Logic Trees

Through this course, students learn the overall thinking system of the McKinsey method and create a solid foundation of thinking for later developing into more specialized courses such as logic trees, pyramid structures, problem solving, and strategy.
