An illustration course where you learn the tricks of making pictures that leave an impression on you when you look at them

In this day and age, SNS and the internet have spread, and trends are changing drastically. What is a “pattern that is unique to me” that is unshakable even in such an age? Are you worried about how to find it, how to get it evaluated, or how to show the picture?

In this classI will teach you know-how that can only be learned here, such as the importance of discovering something you like and incorporating it into a picture and how to create an atmosphere.

STEP1. How to make a picture that looks great even with a simple composition

The first work I draw with my classmates is a picture of a bust-up composition. In my first lesson, I'll talk about the process of drawing an illustration. Next, you will learn how to search for motifs in the work, how to combine them, and how to create compositions that are conscious of guiding the human eye. We aim to complete the picture by changing the line thickness and touch of the line drawing of the character, which is the most important character in the bust-up work, and how to draw the outline (accessory) that enhances the character's appeal.

STEP2. How to use colors and textures that determine the impression at first glance

How do you use colors that determine the image of the work, that is, the feelings of the characters? First, I'll use my work as a reference example and give a lecture on how to use colors depending on the mood. Also, I'll introduce the brushes I often use, so I'll start by applying the background from the undercoat of the work.

Furthermore, I will also explain how to use textures to add atmosphere to the work. After explaining the differences in the atmosphere of the illustrations that change with and without textures, and the recommended brushes and how to use them, it's time to complete the first work.

STEP3. How to make a picture that looks great even with a background composition with characters

The knowledge I learned when making bust-up works can also be used to create background illustrations with the following characters. Here, I will explain how to add items to an illustration and create a work that steals people's attention even more. In addition, I will also teach you the contents that have been leveled up, from precautions when drawing line drawings for each background and main character, how to draw line drawings that make the drawing screen stand out, and how to draw line drawings that quote comic expressions.

Next, we will decide on the color that will be the theme of this work and start coloring. I'll also explain layer functions that you should keep in mind, so why not improve your illustration skills one step further?

BONUS In order to continue drawing pictures from now on

Among those interested in this class, I think there are many people whose goal is to make painting a hobby or make it their main job. As a trick for continuing to draw illustrations in the future, I'll tell you what I've noticed myself.

In the second half of the lesson, I want to convey the importance of finding and drawing something you like, and how wonderful it is, so I think it would be nice if you could “have confidence in what you like.”

A way to attract what you want to appeal to in the color scheme of an illustration with a low saturation, and a guide to the painter's eye that understands the concept when you take a quick look. I'm proud that the way it creates a feeling of air is characteristic. Let's draw together against expressions that we are good at!

Q. What kind of activities does Kino Hana Hiranko usually do? Please introduce yourself briefly.

A. Currently a freelance illustrator, she dropped out of the Kyoto Seika University character design course in 2017 due to illness before becoming a freelancer. I recuperated from there, but I came to Tokyo alone in 2019 and am living as a painter. I'm still living as a freelancer, blessed with friends and being helped by people around me.

Q. Please tell us about your experience and achievements so far.

A. Born in Ehime Prefecture. I dropped out of Kyoto Seika University, and from there I exhibited my solo exhibition “War in My Head” at ACG Lab Co., Ltd. It also won the Best Creative Award in a contest organized in collaboration with Kodansha Kickstarter.

Q. How did your teacher get into digital illustration?

It just so happened that I liked drawing illustrations, and since I often expanded my knowledge naturally, I also liked it as a motif. Also, I like ruddy colors and grayish (low saturation) color schemes, etc., so I'm doing as many things I really like as I like.

Q. Why did you offer online classes with CLASS101?

Teaching someone and verbalizing one's own techniques and ways of thinking is a necessary task for me, partly because I also admired the teaching profession, and I always wanted the experience and advice I had cultivated to be an opportunity for someone to take a step forward, so there was no reason to refuse.

Q. What points did you put the most effort into when planning the class? Who would you recommend this class to?

Sometimes you can draw a face to your heart's content, and you don't need a background. I included it as a point I wanted to convey that the means of conveying what I like is an elaborate method rather than a half-hearted method, or that something that has been thoroughly cut off and simplified is better. I want people who don't have confidence in drawing what they like, and people who are not good at drawing pictures for some reason because they may not be accepted to see it. I would like to include lessons and messages so that something can be stimulating.

Q. What kind of experience do you want the students to have through this class?

No matter what kind of expression a picture is, I want you to experience that what the person puts in what they want to do is properly filled with passion, and it has a good atmosphere as a work.

Q. Please give a message to the students!

It's often very difficult until you take the first step and become the ideal person you envision. However, I definitely want you to enjoy the experience of overcoming it even once. If you draw something you like the way you like, there is always someone somewhere who will acknowledge it. Let's take this class and work hard with me!
