Always a diary

Nice to meet you. I am <<>Joongang Ilbo> in 2016, and I am Moon Bo-young, a poetry writer. My books include “The Pillar of the Book” (2017), “Battlegrounds” (2019), the novel book “Yawning Hill”, the essay book “The Best Long Run” (2019), “The Diary Period” (2021), “I'm Anxious, So I Took It Away Today” (2020), and “The Most Affectionate Way to Hate People” (2019).

No matter what genre I wrote, the beginning was always a diary. However, when I write a diary, the writing comes out naturally, but when I write poetry, I feel as if I am in front of someone I like. Unlike a diary, when I was writing poetry, I suddenly used vocabulary I didn't use, or an unnatural appearance of myself popped up. So I wanted to write poetry just like when I was in a diary.

I love journaling. When I was in college, I learned about the humane and good side of diaries while reading my friends' diaries in a literature club. This is true when you read someone's diary, and it becomes impossible to completely hate that person.

Actually, for me, an essay is the same as a diary, but the moment I separate the two, I feel compelled to write with topics and intentions. If I think I'm writing a diary, I think I can write anything, but if I think I'm writing an essay, poem, or novel, I don't think I should write anything, so I'm grumbling.

So no matter what kind of article I write, I write a notebook thinking about writing a diary. If you write it so freely, one day that writing becomes a novel or a poem. I believe that if you live in a house called a diary, you can enter a room called Shira and a room called a novel at any time.

Like writing a diary together

Let's write my own poem

I'll show you 4 ways to write poetry as naturally as if it were a diary.

📝 1. I'm going to turn my diary into poetry

I will practice turning my voice, speech, vocabulary, and imagination naturally from my diary into poetry.

📝 2. I'm going to learn and use the basic grammar of poetry

I will learn the forms of poetry, such as repetition and parables, and write poetry that I use in my own way. I write down sentences that rarely come to mind in my daily life on a post-it note, and one day I find unexpected sincerity when I choose any chapter to make a parable. I believed that sincerity is in the heart and that it can be drawn out through language, but I think poetry is to say something like that, and then find sincerity there.

When I first wrote a poem, I poured out any words and looked intently into them. I looked still at the sentences I spit out, and there was something I wanted to say. That's why I thought the truth was generous. Pull out as many as you can and search for your own sentences there together.

📝 3. I'm going to read poems of various genres

We'll read and talk about various poems from outside of the textbook together. I plan to read a variety of poems, such as prose poems, story poems, and memo poems. Also, I'll analyze my poems and tell you the story behind my collection of poems.

📝 4. I'll tell you a story about writing

As if I were going to work, I'll also share stories about writing, word-gathering notes, starting notes, making a chance book, and posting. I'm currently working on mailing handwritten diaries and poems to readers. I'll also tell you about living as a full-time poet and making a living through writing.

A diary that captures time,

Poems that catch me

I hope this class will make me a little more familiar with poetry that I usually find difficult. Let's write a poem like a diary with me and create a poem of my own. I'll be waiting for you in class.

Hello, I'm Moon Bo-young, a poetry writer, who joined the school as <Joongang Ilbo in 2016.

A collection of poems from a book I wrote There are “The Pillar of the Book” (2017), “Battlegrounds” (2019), the novel book “Yawning Hill,” the essay book “The Best Long Run” (2019), “The Diary Age” (2021), “I'm Anxious, So I Took It Away Today” (2020), and “The Most Affectionate Way to Hate People” (2019).

He received the 36th Kim Su-yeong Prize for Literature for his collection of poems, “The Pillar of the Book,” and “The Book Pillar” has now been translated and published in the United States.

Until now, I've always had a diary as the foundation of my work.

I love journals just as much as poetry. But one day I was curious. It's easy to write a diary, but I wonder why poetry can't do that. When I write a diary, it's natural, and when I write poetry, I suddenly become a different person, as if I had frozen in front of my favorite person.

Since then, I've tried to write poetry as if I were writing a diary. I wanted my sincerity to be as natural as writing a poem when I was writing a diary. Let's write poetry step by step while sharing various concerns. I'll be with you.
